Shri Sanjay Kumar is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and also holds an MBA degree. He possesses 38 years of rich and diverse experience in the hydrocarbon and energy sector.
Since joining GAIL in 1988, Shri Kumar has overseen several key business verticals including Gas Marketing, LNG Sourcing, Trading & Shipping, Petrochemical and Liquid Hydrocarbon (LHC) Marketing, PTA Marketing, Paraxylene Sourcing, City Gas Distribution (CGD), Business Development, Gas Transmission, Project Management, and Pipeline Operations & Maintenance. His extensive cross-functional exposure has enabled him to develop deep strategic and operational insight across the entire natural gas, LNG and downstream hydrocarbon value chain.
Shri Kumar played a pivotal role in establishing and developing GAIL Global (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., GAIL’s overseas LNG trading subsidiary, into a globally recognized LNG trading entity. He was closely associated with expanding GAIL’s international LNG footprint and strengthening its presence in global energy markets.
Prior to assuming charge as Director (Marketing), GAIL, Shri Kumar served as Managing Director of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), India’s leading City Gas Distribution company. During his tenure, IGL further strengthened its position in clean mobility and expanded its PNG and CNG infrastructure across the National Capital Region.
Presently, apart from being a member of the Board of GAIL, Shri Kumar is also Chairman of GAIL Global (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. (GGSPL), Konkan LNG Limited (KLL) ,Bengal Gas Company Limited (BGCL) and Bhagyanagar Gas Limited (BGL) . He also serves as Director on the Boards of GAIL Gas Limited (GGL) and Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL).
With his extensive experience in natural gas marketing, LNG portfolio management, international trading, CGD business and energy transition initiatives, Shri Sanjay Kumar continues to contribute significantly towards strengthening GAIL’s leadership position in India’s evolving energy landscape and advancing the nation’s vision for a gas-based economy.
